Possum Skins
Our possum skins are stunning. Tanned in Victoria, they are luxuriously soft. We are very proud that we have played a small part in helping First Nations people revitalise their possum skin cloak tradition.
The Brush Tail Possum harvest
Lenah harvests brush tail possum under Tasmanian Government licence and the meat is sold, ensuring full use of the animal.
- The harvest is tightly regulated to ensure it is both sustainable and humane.
- Tasmania is the only state in Australia that it is legal to harvest possums for commercial purposes.
- Hides come in a mix of approx. 30% red and 70% grey coat colour.
In addition to fur we provide products for traditional cultural purposes such as sinews and teeth.
The possum skin cloak tradition
Prior to European arrival, many Aboriginal cultures had a vibrant tradition around possum skins cloaks. Aboriginal cultures were diverse and generalisations are not always appropriate. But in many cultures across SE Australia, when children survived infancy, they were given a tanned possum skin with their place in society burnt into the leather. Each year another skin inscribed with the important steps in their development would be added, until they had a cloak of 30 or so skins telling their life story. This wonderfully warm and waterproof cloak also served as a burial shroud.
Lenah is proud to supply possum skins to communities re-vitalising this tradition.
Wallaby & Possum Fur/Fibre
NATURAL AUSTRALIAN FIBRE
Wallaby and possum fibre is great for home spinning and felting. Both have their own unique soft feel and can be blended with wool or other fibres.
These are uniquely Tasmanian products – even the New Zealand possums originate from Tasmania. Lenah harvests wallaby and possum principally to produce meat; the fibre is a terrific by-product.
Both wallaby and possum emit almost no methane, in contrast to sheep. Methane is 27 times worse than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas. Our fibres are a true greenhouse friendly option.
